In nature, moving water is much fresher than stagnant water. The movement constantly breaks the surface tension
of the water and draws oxygen from the air into the water. This process is called aeration and it makes water more
appealing to drink. Pets may be drawn by instinct to moving water for this reason.
The DRINKWELL® PET FOUNTAIN filters and aerates continuously moving water to keep it much fresher than standing
bowl water. It satisfies the urge for running water and so helps eliminate jumping on counters in search of dripping
faucets.
Even cats who don't jump on counters to drink from faucets may drink more water using the Fountain. Why is this
important? As the veterinarian who created the Fountain for her own cats knows, many cats may not drink as much
water as they should. This is one reason the urine becomes so concentrated and predisposes some cats to urinary
tract disease. Cats with urinary tract or kidney disease have a critical need for water to support kidney function
or prevent crystal formation and obstruction.

In 1994 a licensed veterinarian Dr. M. Burns was very frustrated with the behavior of one of her cats named "Munchkin".
"Munchkin" would only drink water from a dripping faucet and would lay around on the kitchen counters
all day waiting for her human to turn the faucet on. Aside from finding cat hair in the food preparation areas
on the counters, Dr. Burns was getting very tired of running to the faucets to satisfy "Munchkin's" demand
for running water. Add to this a nasty water bill because someone would forget to turn the darn faucets back off,
and well, you get the picture! But what is a responsible pet owner to do? As a veterinarian, Dr. Burns was well
aware of the importance of sufficient water intake in cats to maintain healthy kidney and urinary tract function.
Lack of enough water intake will make a cat's urine more concentrated than normal and leads to an environment where
bladder crystal formation becomes more likely. This can lead to urinary tract obstruction and the infamous and
potentially fatal Feline Urinary Syndrome. Therefore, denying "Munchkin" her running water was just not
an option.
Then, eureka! Dr. Burns decided "Munchkin" would have running water and maintain good hydration, but
not at the kitchen sink. This running water would magically appear directly in "Munchkin's" bowl! From
this first home prototype, the Drinkwell® Pet Fountain was born.
